Why Blowouts Happen (And Why They’re Basically Inevitable)

If you’re a parent, chances are you’ve experienced it: You pick up your baby and everything seems fine... then catastrophe hits!
The diaper didn’t just fail, it surrendered.
Diaper blowouts are one of parenting’s great mysteries. How can something so small produce something so… powerful? And why does it always happen in the car seat, at Target, or five minutes before you’re supposed to leave the house?
Let’s break down why diaper blowouts happen, what’s actually going on in there, and why it’s not (usually) your fault.
Babies Have Liquid Diets (and Liquid Output)
The biggest culprit? Milk.
Breast milk and formula are liquid, which means baby poop is naturally loose, especially in the early months. Unlike adult digestion, a baby’s system hasn’t learned how to bulk things up yet. The result:
Runny consistency
High velocity
Zero respect for diaper boundaries
Even the best diaper can struggle when gravity and physics team up against it.
Tiny Bodies, Big Pressure
Babies may be small, but their digestive systems are surprisingly mighty.
When a baby strains, squirms, or lets out one of those innocent little grunts, pressure builds fast. And since poop follows the path of least resistance, it often goes:
Up the back
Out the leg holes
Everywhere except where you want it
This is why blowouts so often travel north instead of staying contained.
Diapers Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All
A diaper that’s:
Too small → no room for expansion
Too big → gaps around the legs and waist
Either scenario increases the odds of a blowout.
Add in baby body types (chunky thighs, long torsos, tiny waists), and suddenly a diaper that worked yesterday is completely unprepared for today’s situation.
Timing Is Never on Your Side
Blowouts have impeccable comedic timing.
They love:
Car seats (pressure + seated position = disaster)
Naps
Fresh outfits
Public places
The exact moment you think, “They just went.”
Why? Because movement, positioning, and compression all make it easier for poop to escape upward and outward.
Your Baby Is Growing (and Their Digestion Is Changing)
Growth spurts, starting solids, teething, or switching formula can all change:
Poop volume
Texture
Frequency
Your diaper setup might not have caught up yet, and blowouts are often the first sign that something needs adjusting.
So… Are Blowouts Preventable?
Sometimes.
You can size up diapers, fasten them perfectly, and still lose the battle. Blowouts are a normal part of babyhood, not a parenting failure. In fact, there are an estimated 13 MILLION diaper blowouts EVERY WEEK, just in the USA! Those are crazy numbers, but atleast you know you aren't in this alone.
They happen because:
Babies are learning how to digest
Diapers have limits
Physics is undefeated
The Silver Lining (Yes, There Is One)
Blowouts don’t last forever. One day you’ll change a diaper without fear. One day you’ll wear light-colored clothes again. One day you’ll laugh instead of cry (okay… you might already be doing both).
Until that day comes, Messy Baby Co.'s Baby Booty Blowout Gear is here to help you get through these messy SHITuations! We take the stress out of blowouts so you can get cleaned up and back to your day quicker and with less destruction.
